The work looks fairly easy, but the job is always best left to knowledgable workers. Concrete is often hard to work with and repairing slip-ups can be an highly costly learning experience.
The process starts with a conventional concrete slab or form mold in virtually any shape imaginable. Then, surface retarders that prevent the topmost layer of concrete from fully drying can be applied. After the lower section dries, the top layer is washed away to expose the little bits of sand and aggregate. Most of the time though, the concrete is allowed to become almost dry and then – just like the Romans – little pieces of rock are spread across the surface and then lightly pressed in evenly. The resultant appearance and texture is certain to be entirely unique due to the individual nature of every piece of concrete and the limitless potential of cheap and diverse aggregate material.
A costlier but more dramatic option is to further enhance the exposed aggregate concrete by grinding the aggregate level with the surface, and then buffing the whole surface to a brilliant shine. The effect has the look of exotic stonework or granite slab.
